Student assessment forms an integral part of the entire teaching-learning process. It plays a crucial role in any coherent educational experience as it assesses and studies the entire process of the development of the student’s thought process. Student assessment can be yearly, monthly or weekly and depending on the period of implementation of the assessment, student assessment can be broadly divided into two types:
- Formative Student Assessment: Formative student assessment is conducted throughout the period of the course in a regular basis to gain useful information about the student’s progress and thereby charting the process of further improvement in his learning. This type of assessment not only goads the student to study at a regular basis but also helps them grasp formidable knowledge in a systematic way, allowing them enough scope for improvement.
- Summative Student Assessment: Summative student assessment is generally conducted at the termination of a course and tends to provide a final judgment on the performance of the student. This sort of assessment assesses the student only once and studies the cumulative effect of learning on the student, thereby providing them no chance for improvement during the learning process.
Depending on the person conducting the assessment, student assessment can again be of two types:
- Student Self Assessment, wherein the student introspects and analyzes his own performance. This is more of a personal analysis intended for self-development.
- Student Assessment, wherein the teacher, supervisor or course coordinator assesses the performance of the student, which is more of an institutional analysis intended to pass a verdict on the progress of the student, usually done with the help of assigning of marks or grades.
